Raffo Racing End it's Day Early

The annual spring run transforms the quiet fishing town of San Felipe into a huge Mecca  for the off-road racing community. This year's race included section that were used during the Baja 1000. This meant that sections of the course would rougher be than expected. Chris Raffo and his band of supporters had prerun the course several times and were ready to take on all challengers. To ensure that the truck could set the pace in Class 3, Dennis Chencherick,  the team's engine specialist, installed a new set of aluminum heads that lightened the Chevrolet K5 Blazer as well as added much needed horsepower.

Race Day

The mid-morning start time for Class 3 gave Raffo and company a change to prepare for the suddenly changing weather. At day break the weather was a little cool but clear. By the time several of the faster classes had already taken the green flag, heavy rain was coming down just outside of San Felipe. As Chris headed down the course rain was another challenge most desert racers rarely experience. The team hoped Chris' Midwest racing background would help the team's run through the wet conditions. Unfortunately about 30 miles into the event, the drivetrain had a serious failure. The transmission's input shaft broke, and caused the transmission housing crack. The relative short race didn't leave enough time for the crew to replace the components while out on the course. The #303 California Tomato BFGoodrich Tires Sunoco Fuels Phil's Inc. Chevrolet K5 Blazer quickly saw its day end.

"The truck felt great unfortunately the drivetrain failure didn't give us any warning. The new heads Dennis installed added about 40 hp to the truck. The extra power probably helped contribute to the failure. The rest of the truck is perfect. We will regroup and get ready for Mexico," commented Chris Raffo.
